The most meaningful commissions are rarely a single piece of jewelry.
For many years, a longtime client entrusted me with celebrating the milestones of his marriage. Rather than choosing gifts as occasions arrived, we planned an entire year’s worth of jewelry—Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, a birthday, an anniversary, and Christmas—each piece thoughtfully connected to the next.
It began with Valentine’s Day.
He selected an extraordinary unheated Ceylon sapphire pendant suspended beneath a north-south princess-cut diamond. Beautiful on its own, it also became the benchmark for everything that followed.
Throughout the year, I invited his wife into the studio for routine cleanings and inspections. She believed the visits were simply part of caring for her jewelry.
In reality, I was quietly studying the pendant—its proportions, its exact shade of blue, its saturation, and the way it responded to light. Finding another unheated Ceylon sapphire that naturally matched it would take nearly the entire year.
By Christmas, the suite was complete.
